Arthur Valentine is delighted to announce the release of his latest single, Dream About You, the lead single from Arthur Valentine's forthcoming debut EP, Splitscreen.
Dream About You is an ambitious bedroom pop track - the whole song written, recorded and produced in Arthur Valentine’s home studio over an 18 month period. Yet despite its humble creation, it absorbs influences that range from hip hop artists like BROCKHAMPTON and Tyler, the Creator, R&B artists such as Frank Ocean and Justin Timberlake, to alternative pop artists like Still Woozy and Dominic Fike.
The track establishes itself in the first twenty-five seconds. Arthur's relaxed, carefree guitar line sets itself up before disappearing into mist; then as he croons “my fingertips are burning to bone, but I won’t let go” a chorus of processed vocals augments the last few words; tracing out what makes his style significant.
The video, juxtaposing a distraught-looking Arthur Valentine drinking in a racecar bed against wide blue skies and a view to Cork City was directed by Arthur Valentine & Jordan Gough and filmed with Tim Caruso back in 2019.
As the track develops, these augmentations pick up, surrounding his voice in prismatic autotuned harmonies, cozy bass guitar, fluttering minimal percussion and airy lead synths. At its core, it's a confessional and honest love song; one that somehow soundtracked someone's proposal back in 2019.
Dream About You sets the tone for the Splitscreen EP, displaying and expanding upon the dimensions Arthur's “magnificent (and) passionate” (Indie Buddie) sound; stepping away from the “impressively minimalist” (The Irish Times / Nialler9) production seen on some of Arthur's earlier releases, yet maintaining Arthur’s “undeniable level of smooth” (REMY).
Throughout Splitscreen, as on Dream About You and previous single CHOKER, Arthur revels in blending his traditional acoustic pop songwriting with innovative, wholly unique production. This new style was very literally developed in-house; a founding member of Cork's cross-genre Hausu collective, and living with electronic artists and producers Actualacid and Automatic Blue, Splitscreen is the product of years of finding natural ways to build out his songs. Splitscreen as a result sounds truly unique; a uniquely Irish take on pop and R&B that draws from no end of unusual sources of samples and inspirations, wrapped in sunlight.
Dream About You was written, recorded, produced and mixed by Arthur Valentine, additional mix by Cian Sweeney and mastered by Cian Sweeney. Arthur Valentine has the same pop sensibilities as much of the softer side of Brockhampton’s catalog [...] with roots firmly in bedroom pop, but with an additional level of sheen that doesn’t disrupt its intimate qualities. One for fans of Clairo, Ryan Beatty and Christian Alexander” — District Magazine
“Arthur Valentine recalls the confessional tracks of Frank Ocean. Not a bad look for the debut song from this new Cork artist.” — Nialler9 / The Irish Times
“Although I like a variety of pop styles, Arthur Valentine brings more to the table than most. Jazzy guitar-picking, different vocal styles across the track (soul, rn'b, blues and pop), and an undeniable level of smooth.” — REMY
